Weight Room Champs

With the 2010 track season fast approaching, my fellow distance runner and co-writer of this blog, Caitlin, and I have been working out in our school’s weight room daily. Our routine is as follows: ride the elliptical machines until we get dizzy and high, run a lap around the school (1000 meters) as fast as we can (our PR is 4:23), buy candy from the vending machine, sit in the locker room and eat said candy until our ride comes.

So step one: ride the elliptical machines until we get dizzy and high. Now after school we have to change super fast and run to the weight room to make sure we get the good, fully functional ellipticals. Otherwise, the whole day is thrown off. When we were weight room noobs, we could only go for 30 minutes. Now we are rising up to be stars of the weight room, and are at 45 minutes. We usually listen to our I-pods, laugh at the toolfools who use the gym, or make up raps (look out for our CD being released on Tuesday). This usually is enough to keep us entertained until the last 10 minutes. The last 10 minutes of our workout are the most intense. We are so tired that we are dizzy and laugh at everything and we have runner’s high. Then when there is one minute left, we crank up the resistance to 10! (We usually stay at 6) Then we have to go as hard and fast as we can in that last minute. Then after we are done we do our good deed for the day and wipe off our machines with the sanitary wipes.

Step two: run a lap around the school as fast as we can. So at this point we are high and extremely tired. So we get a drink from the water fountain. Then we go outside in the freezing weather wearing only shorts and a t-shirt and we start the timer. Then we sprint as fast as we can, trying not to pass out or die. As we get to the junior high all of the babies leaving school get in our way and we have to dodge them like an obstacle course! It’s madness! We make it back to the weight room, barely in one piece and stop the timer. Our fasted time ever is 4:23. We try to break it every time we do our lap. After we are done with the lap we take a few minutes to catch our breath and be able to walk straight again.

Step three: buy candy from the vending machine. Then we crawl back upstairs to the gym lobby with our emergency dollar bills in hand. We take about 10 minutes to decide what we want (although we get the same thing every time-the crispy crisp crunch- accept they are all out now!!!). Our dollars slide into the machine, we punch in the number that we want, and the delicious, mouthwatering, juicy, sweet, sugary, tasty, melty, crunchy, perfection candy falls into our hands.

Step four: sit in the locker room and eat said candy. This is my personal favorite time of our workout. After we buy our candy we go back down to the locker room (this takes about 10 minutes since we are so high) and sit and eat it! We laugh at everything and say crazy things to the other girls in the locker room. Sometimes we try to stretch, but it never seems to work out and we always end up lying down instead. After our candy bars are gone (this is a devastating moment) we grab all of our crap and sllooowwwllyyy walk back up to the lobby and wait for out rides.

So all of this seems super cool and awesome, until the toolfools took over! Now we aren’t allowed in the weight room on Mondays and Wednesdays because the football team is in there. Track season starts in three weeks, and football season doesn’t start until next school year!! It’s an outrage! But unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it so we just sucked it up and joined the football team so we can still workout. Jk, but that would be pretty BA. So now you know the full length version of what our everyday crazy, running-filled lives our like. Impressed?

yeah I thought about putting that but I decided against it. I thought the uglies should accept us for the slow, out of shape runners that we are.
